Teen People: Election Issue- Students4Reform

RADICAL ACTION: As a member of Students4Reform, Li Lin keeps a watchful eye on New York politicians. The group, made up of about 40 high school and college students who work part-time at a Manhattan law firm, targets politicians who not only oppose campaign finance reform but also accept donations from tobacco companies. In the past year Li and Students4Reform sent out some 80,000 postcards to voters, listing their representatives' voting records on reform bills - and noting the ones who received Knicks tickets and free dinners from special-interest groups. "[Elections] are supposed to be based on issues," says Li. "Just because a candidate has a lot of money doesn't mean they're right for the job. The winners should be people with a cause [who] can help the mass majority."

UNITED VOICE: Students4Reform has since moved on to phase two of its political warfare. Last September members set up a toll-free number and urged New Yorkers to vent concerns to elected officials. Thousands phoned in, forcing besieged politicians such as state Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno to ask the phone company to put a stop to the calls. "A lot of times teens feel like their voices don't count," Li says. "But if you feel strongly about something, you can get it done."

THE BIG PICTURE: Li believes everyone benefits from the group's watchdog role. "If we put more pressure on politicians, maybe they'll come up with reform that could actually work," she says.

WHAT YOU CAN DO: "Start early," urges Li, "whether that means joining the Young Democrats or Republicans at your school or writing letters to your representatives. Even if you're too young to vote, you can make a difference." - Michelle Hainer
